GYROTONIC® / GYROKINESIS®

 

WHAT IS GYROTONIC®?

GYROTONIC® is a unique system that releases muscular tension by stretching and strengthening the whole body, increasing range of motion and enhancing coordination.  The movements are continuous, flowing into one another without interruption, so that an entire 360° range of motion creates a bridge between contraction and extension.

MOVEMENTS ARE CONTINUOUS, WITHOUT INTERRUPTION, AN ENTIRE 360° RANGE OF MOTION

Using a Pulley Tower and other specialized equipment, movements are synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns using rhythmical or melodic expression, creating a gentle flow of energy through the entire boy which can be more or less aerobic/ cardiovascular, depending on intensity and speed.

GYROTONIC® movement is designed to emphasize multiple joint articulation, strengthening the surrounding ligaments and attachments.  Special attention is paid to increase the functional capacity of the spine, resulting in a well proportioned body that is significantly less prone to injuries.  The body obtains greater flexibility and essential strength, resulting in a feeling of rejuvenation and increased vitality.

WHAT IS GYROKINESIS®?

GYROKINESIS® movement, what used to be called "Yoga for Dancers", is a method that gently works the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement. It upholds the same concepts as the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® without the use of machines so you find even deeper internal connections to help your body expand and release. We work on stools and floor mats.

Fluidity is the key.  Postures are not held for long periods of time.  Instead, the body is gently coaxed into release through the use of breath, making exercises appear and feel more like dance than yoga.

This way of moving invigorates and re-educates the body to move fluidly with relaxation and power, and builds a bridge for the body, mind, and spirit in an organic way so healing can begin.

Classes are  1-2 hrs depending on the level. We usually begin with a standing rocking sequence to help release the legs then move onto stools to prepare the body for the spinal motions. And, because   sequence of movements have no beginning and no end your body gets a chance to just keep moving, expanding and releasing tension.

Juliu Horvath’s personal struggle with chronic pain led him to develop this method.  It embraces many key elements of yoga, dance, swimming, and tai chi, and is the core of Horvath’s methodology.

This methodology systematically and gently works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating exercises.  Movement stimulates the body’s internal organs and integrates corresponding breathing patterns.

GYROTONIC® AS REHABILITATION

When working with people who are injured, recovering from surgery or in chronic pain it is important to re-educate the body. Through deep diaphragmatic breathing beginning on the floor, the body begins to release tension in the area of deepest stress. The inherent tensegrity system (three-dimensional stability) is ignited using targeted exercises.  Using the Gyrotonic Tower allows the body to re-organize and strengthen to help regain full functionality.
